Using Supplementary Texts
In addition to framing the novel with historical and political information, it is also helpful to supply students with an outline of Marjane’s family tree, namely her maternal great grandfather and grandfather, before reading because students often have many question about how Satrapi’s family is related to Iran’s ruling history. In addition to the resources mentioned above, after students finish reading the first book, The Story of a Childhood, I supplement students’ reading with an article from the New Yorker titled “Letter from Tehran: Veiled Threat, What Do the Iranian Protests Mean for the Country’s Women?” (2009). There are striking similarities in this article to what Marjane Satrapi reports in Persepolis, as well as the Frontline video. I read the article aloud during class, and students follow along reading, listening, and underlining parts that remind them of Satrapi’s experiences. The journalist interviews two women who experienced violence during their daring forays into public protest in Iran during the summer after the fraudulent election of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Further, the article explores the gradually increasing role women have played in the political process from the 1906 Constitutional Revolution to the Islamic Revolution of 1979 to the present. Students make connections between what they read in a book in English class to other real-world media sources.
